Cough syrup for adults and children – with and without alcohol
Homemade cough syrup has the advantage that it works completely without chemicals – because it is made purely from natural home remedies and is also significantly cheaper. Prepared in large portions, it can be used for the whole family. When treating children, however, alcohol should be avoided.
The homemade juice is more popular with the little ones, even if the less tasty herbs are left out.
Cough Syrup For Children: Effective Without Alcohol
The following cough syrup recipe is alcohol-free and also uses a few ingredients. It is well known that children like this mixture because sweet honey dominates the taste.
Ingredients For The Cough Syrup For Children
a large onion
lots of honey
a small glass bottle (or a comparable vessel)
Preparation
First, the onion is cut into small cubes. The smaller the cubes, the better they will later dissolve.
Then layer the cut onion alternately with a layer of honey in the bottle or jar.
Now it’s time to wait. You have to let the onion and honey mixture stand for at least 2 to 3 hours until a viscous juice has formed.
The onion cough syrup can be kept in the refrigerator for several days.
Since it consists purely of natural ingredients, it can be administered several times a day as required.
Herbal Cough Syrup For Adults
Alcohol has a disinfecting effect and also ensures that the cough syrup has a longer shelf life. For adult patients, a few beneficial herbs can also be added to the juice.
Sage has an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect, which is particularly beneficial in the case of a painful, dry cough. Thyme relaxes the bronchi and makes it easier to cough up. Ribwort plantain inhibits the urge to cough, kills bacteria, and also strengthens the immune system. A strong mixture with a lot of power from nature.
Ingredients
1.5 onions
0.2 liters of water
100 grams of honey
2 to 4 centiliters of strong alcohol
1 tbsp dried sage leaves
1 tbsp dried ribwort
1 tbsp dried thyme
Preparation
Cut the onions into small cubes and put them in a saucepan with the water, honey, sage, ribwort, and thyme.
Boil everything briefly and let it simmer for about 5 minutes.
Then, pour the contents of the pot through a sieve to separate the liquid from the remaining bits.
The 2 to 4 centiliters of alcohol are not added until after cooking – brown rum works well.
Keep the herbal cough syrup in the refrigerator and take one to two tablespoons three times a day.
You Have To Pay Attention To This When Making Cough Syrup
The best thing about the DIY cough syrups: They don’t have any annoying side effects such as fatigue or other side effects that conventional cold medications often bring with them.
You can safely use the cough syrup for children for two days if it is not refrigerated, and it can even be stored in the refrigerator for five days. Because of the alcohol content, the juice has a longer shelf life for adults.
Tip: If the pure syrup is too intense for you, you can pour the mixture with hot water as tea. That is twice as good because, especially during a cold, you should keep warm and drink enough.
